DARSHAN ACADEMY POETRY FEST 2016

In Memory of the Gracious Master Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj [1921-1989]

Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj

Sant-Darshan-Singh-Ji-Maharaj Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj (1921-1989) is known as a great poet-saint and one of India’s foremost poets of mystic verse in the Urdu language. Two of his published poetry collections, Manzil-e-Noor (Abode of Light) and Matah-e-Noor (Treasure House of Light) won him prestigious Urdu Academy Awards. When the government of India produced a compendium of mystic literature, its anthology included many of Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj's writings. His poems began being broadcast on national radio when he was only seventeen.

During Sant Darshan Singh Ji’s four world tours, he was presented with the keys to many cities and was honoured by the Colombian parliament with its Medal of Congress and by the Congress of the United States with citations of merit.

He worked tirelessly to spread the message of human unity and peace throughout the world and published books translated into over fifty languages. He emphasized what he called positive mysticism, pursuing spiritual goals while fulfilling all our obligations to family, society, and the world. Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj was imbued with love for all creation. Divine love was his hallmark and was reflected in his every word and action.

An All Darshan Academy Poetry Writing and Recitation Fest is being organized in remembrance of the great mystic poet Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaja. The following activities are being conducted in October/November in all the schools:

Poetry Recitation

The event will be organized in the following categories:

  • Group 1: Nursery & KG
  • Group 2: Class I & II
  • Group 3: Class III & IV
  • Group 4: Class V & VI
  • Group 5: Class VII & VIII
  • Group 6: Class IX & X
  • Group 7: Class XI & XII
  • Group 8: Teachers
  • Group 9: Parents & Grandparents

For Nursery to grade II ( i.e. groups 1 & 2) , the poem for recitation should be selected from the 10 poems (5 in Hindi and 5 in English) enclosed in Annexure 2.

For groups 3 to 9 the poem for recitation can be selected from the attached Annexure 1 Or any other poem by Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj.

The best recitation from each group is to be recorded. This should be saved in CD/DVD and sent to DEF.

The recording of poems received from the schools will be judged on the following parameters:

  • Pronunciation and accent (10 pts)
  • Expression/Feeling (10 pts)

The best entries in each group across DAs will be awarded:

  • First Prize
  • Second Prize
  • Third Prize

The poem should be recited and not be sung like a song. Students may be given 1 mark in the next internal assessment as part of reading project. Participant should say their own name, class, name of the school, name of the book and poem before recitation on the CD/DVD. In case of young students, the teacher may do this.

Poetry Writing

  • Group 1: Class III & IV
  • Group 2: Class V & VI
  • Group 3: Class VII & VIII
  • Group 4: Class IX & X
  • Group 5: Class XI & XII
  • Group 6: Teachers
  • Group 7: Parents

The event is to be organized during Enrichment period (zero period).

Required 100% participation by students in all academies.

Participants can submit their composition/s either in Hindi or English or in both.

The best three entries of each group will be sent to DEF from each academy.

Entries may be submitted in one of the following forms.

  • Original neat handwriting
  • Typed on A4 Sheet
  • Soft Copy

The top three entries in each group from amongst all entries submitted by the schools will be awarded.

Participants can write a poem on any topic from the Darshan Academy Spiritual Curriculum. Students may compose their poem on any one of the topics of the Spiritual Curriculum, in Hindi or English. If they wish they can combine a few or all of the topics into a cohesive whole (not fragmentary) within 150 – 250 words. Word limit may be overlooked for outstanding compositions.

The Poems received from the schools will be judged on the following parameters:

  • Adherence to and treatment of theme(10 pts)
  • Creativity (10 pts)
  • Use of Language(10 pts)

The best entries in each category across Darshan Academies will be awarded:

  • First Prize
  • Second Prize
  • Third Prize

Ghazal

The very air is dancing, and the cup itself is in ecstasy,
For today you have come with the message of spring.

I have learned to cherish all creation as my own, 
Your message of love is the very meaning of my life.

Your abode is so exalted,
That morning and evening the sun and the moon offer salutations at your threshold

In the journey of love there comes a point
Where even the most proud bend their heads on their own.

Give the happy tiding to those who are thirsting for his glances,
That the beloved stands unveiled on the rooftop in full glory.

To make the whole world drink of divine love, 
O Darshan, the Cupbearer of the heavens has come among us here on earth.

                
Couplets from Love at Every Step

• For Group 3 choose any 3 couplets
• For Group 4 & 5 choose any 5 couplets
• For Group 6 to 9 choose any 7 couplets

The spring night of separation becomes more tearful as it advances,
And my remembrance of you tosses ceaselessly in the bed.

When your devotee’s condition alters but a little,
Life presents itself to me with another cup of sorrow.

Your remembrance is sewn to the hem of my heart;
No matter where I go, I cannot forget my sorrow.

The spring is in full bloom and is most inviting, but without you, O beloved, every flower is on fire. 
It is as though each moment I were being stabbed with pain.

The intensity of love melts life itself;
It is a candle, O Darshan, which is consumed by its own flame.

Whenever I remember the inebriated Cupbearer, 
His intoxication permeates every vein of my body.

I am afraid lest my vows of abstinence broken,
For, behold the rain- laden clouds gather from all directions.

The buds smile and the flowers rejoice,
For the morning zephyr carries the message of the Beloved.

When I look at the pages of the book of my life, 
The days which have gone by, come back to me.
 
The flame has consumed the poor moth,
And it trembles at the thought of its own end.

The distant drums sound sweet, O Darshan, 
And the deadly lightning seems lovely from afar.

Heart to heart and soul to soul, that is a true meeting.
Passing each other, coming and going, is not even an encounter.

The moth was speechless, and the flame was silent;
In the entire assembly there were only two who shared this secret.

A glance of grace is the cure for all pains of the world.
But alas, from where can I secure such a glance of love?

It is my intense desire, O Darshan, that when remembered, 
My life is recalled with the lives of the enlightened mystics.

Begin to live your life according to your aspirations, 
And step toward your chosen goal.

Life is not worth its name unless we meet the challenge of the times.
Play on the instrument of the heart even if it be broken.

This sleeping world will surely awaken,
But first you must arouse your own slumbering hopes and desires.

You would find that what you take for thorns are really flowers,
If you but step into my world of faith.

This desolate scene will become a haven, 
If you fill the world of your heart with love.

Companions will join you and form a caravan, 
But today you must step forth on the path alone.

Offer the wine of love through your lyrical glances, 
That the world may be intoxicated forever.

This life will become youthful and beautiful again
If you but gaze into the eyes of the divine Beloved.
 
Why complain of the darkness, O Darshan?
Instead illumine the lamp of your heart.

Good Manners 

Good Manners are like flowers
They have some magic powers
‘Sorry’ when we are wrong
So we can get along
‘Please‘ for a tasty dish
Or anything we wish
‘Thank You’ for a gift 
And giving me a lift
Use them and see how happy you can be!

                
Love

Love is lovelier than,
all the lovely things of the world.
So love every one whether they are big or small,
with your heart and soul.
That should be your goal.

God is Everywhere

I love the flowers, I love the trees
I love the mountains, I love the streams
I love creation when it’s raining, too
God is here and God is there and God is in you.


                
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Twinkle, twinkle, little star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky 

As your bright and tiny spark
Lights the traveler in the dark,
Though I know not what you are,
Twinkle, twinkle, little star.


                
Love to be in Peace.......

I know not what peace is
When mommy takes me in her arms
 	I feel peaceful
I know not what peace is
When papa sees my result sheet and pats me
	I feel peaceful
I know not what peace is
When my sis listens to my problem patiently
	I feel peaceful
I know not what peace is
When I find people around me cheerful
	I feel peaceful
I know not what peace is
But if this is peace, let it never cease.
